The researchers suggest that inhaled nitric oxide may be an effective treatment for the disease and can be even a good prevention method but still we are waiting for some studies to been done but still these are good news for the millions of people like me, Elon Musk and Jair Bolsonaro, the president of Brasil that will not take any type of vaccine.

1 - COVID-19: Nitric oxide shows promise as antiviral treatment
Researchers at Uppsala University have found that an effective way of treating the coronavirus COVID-19. The substance concerned is nitric oxide (NO), a compound with antiviral properties that is produced by the body itself. The study is published in the journal Redox Biology.
Both antibacterial and antiviral
Nitric oxide (NO) is a compound produced naturally in the body. Its functions include acting like a hormone in controlling various organs. It regulates, for example, tension in the blood vessels and blood flow between and within organs. In acute lung failure, NO can be administered as inhaled gas, in low concentrations, to boost the blood-oxygen saturation level. During the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) coronavirus epidemic of 2003, this therapy was tried out with success. One key reason for the successful results was that inflammation in the patients’ lungs decreased. This property of nitric oxide – the protection it affords against infections, by being both antibacterial and antiviral – is the very one that now interests the researchers.
2 - Can Nitric Oxide Prevent COVID-19 Infection or Progression ?
Nitric oxide is FDA-approved for use in premature and term neonates with persistent pulmonary hypertension, but it has also been used off-label for decades in the adult ICU and operating room to treat patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, acute respiratory distress syndrome, hypoxia, and right ventricular failure after cardiac surgery or lung transplantation.

In their report, the authors said they had never seen anything like that before with NO. Usually, there is an acute response of improved oxygenation, but not a rapid clearing of the chest x-ray. We began to question whether NO actually might have virucidal effects in COVID19.
Other groups tested the effects of NO donor drugs in patients infected with coronavirus species and found that the virus cleared faster and there was survival of eukaryotic cells. A similar effect has been shown in children with viral bronchiolitis, in whom a high dose (160 ppm) of NO gas led to clearing of the infection. A typical dose for children and adults in the ICU is from 5 ppm to 20 ppm. The maximum dose recommended by the FDA is 80 ppm — so we are talking about double or even higher doses of NO. In high dose Nitric Oxide is safe.
Does Nitric Oxide(NO) have any systemic effects or potential adverse effects that must be monitored?
When NO gas mixes with oxygen as it is delivered to the patient, it forms nitrogen dioxide, which is toxic to lung tissue at over 2 ppm. Thus, we are monitoring nitrogen dioxide levels in all study patients.
NO gas is quickly metabolized by hemoglobin when it comes into contact with the lungs. It's immediately converted to nitrate and nitrite, which are eventually cleared by the kidneys. Inhaled NO has no systemic hemodynamic effects about which we are aware.

They added that while inhaled NO has been used successfully to treat severe COVID-19 patients on ventilators, the expense and complicated delivery technique (requiring a hospital setting) makes it an impractical strategy to treat patients recently diagnosed with COVID-19. They suggest that in contrast, their investigational oral lozenge NOviricid could be administered before patients become critically ill, ideally within 72 hours of a positive COVID-19 test.

Because of its rich content of nitric-oxide-boosting flavanols, dark chocolate has been associated with improved blood flow, enhanced brain function, and a lower risk of heart disease, too.
Leafy green vegetables like spinach, arugula, kale and cabbage are packed with nitrates, which are converted to nitric oxide in your body. One study even showed that eating a nitrate-rich meal containing spinach increased salivary nitrate levels eightfold and significantly decreased systolic blood pressure.
Other research has found that consuming high-nitrate leafy greens may also be associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and cognitive decline.
Vitamin C can enhance levels of nitric oxide by increasing its bioavailability and maximizing its absorption in the body. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit are all excellent sources of vitamin C, an important water-soluble vitamin that plays a central role in health.
One test-tube study showed that pomegranate juice was effective in protecting nitric oxide from oxidative damage while also increasing its activity.
Another animal study found that both pomegranate juice and pomegranate fruit extract were able to increase levels of nitric oxide synthase and boost the concentration of nitrates in the blood.
Watermelon is one of the best sources of citrulline, an amino acid that’s converted to arginine and, ultimately, nitric oxide in your body.
One small study found that citrulline supplements helped stimulate nitric oxide synthesis after just a few hours but noted that it may take longer to see positive effects on health.

Nuts and seeds are high in arginine, a type of amino acid that is involved in the production of nitric oxide. Some research suggests that including arginine from foods like nuts and seeds in your diet can help increase nitric oxide levels in your body.
